Artifact 1: TE 801 Math Unit Plan
Standards: 2, 4, 5
Goals: 2
Artifact 1 is a math unit plan I created for TE 801 during my internship year. This unit plan was designed using the backwards design method. Within the math unit plan I started by examining the big ideas from the state standards. After examining the big ideas that I wanted students to learn, I then considered what students what need to know to learn those ideas. I created pre assessments and diagnosed its effectiveness and then reevaluated the pre assessment. Before creating any lessons, I created the formative and summative assessments for the unit. After the completion of the assessment analysis, ways to differentiate instruction, and the daily lessons, I planned ways to engage parents and reflected on my instruction.
I included the artifact because it shows a starting point in my teaching. This artifact shows steps toward meeting standards 2, 4, and 5 and goal 2 of the MATC program. The intent of this unit plan was to introduce teacher prep students to thorough unit planning in order to demonstrate superior knowledge of math content. The unit plan also allowed us to reflect on our own practice after teaching lessons from the unit. By presenting multiple strategies of teaching the big ideas, students could also believe in the teacher expertise and trust their guidance.
This artifact is significant because it displays how far I’ve come. When looking at the details within this unit plan, I can see some places where I may have made errors. In one part of the unit about differentiating instruction, I mention that their were no students in the class with an IEP. In my teaching experience, I now know that was a mistake. I’m not sure about my thinking during that time or my knowledge of IEPs; however, it is highly unlikely that my entire class did not have any students with an IEP. Within my synthesis paper I use this artifact to describe my unreadiness to teach. Even though I was not the most prepared, the lessons of the course stick with me today when planning units and lessons.
